If You Binge One New Show Over the Holidays, Make It Stumptown - PRIMETIMER

I kinda wish I had been on the ball with this one and had found a way to binge watch it like it deserved rather than painstakingly waiting for Wednesday to roll around so I could watch it on Alibi. From the very first Stumptown advert I was hooked, the badass-ness, the violence, Cobie Smulders, uh what more could a gal need?

It was a pleasant surprise to find Jake Johnson involved as well, I do mix him up with other celebs such as Oscar Issac very frequently, but I think I have the correct face memorized to associate with the correct actor now so we are all good. Anyway, for those of you who don't frequent Alibi, Stumptown is a show that is based around our main lady, Dex, who becomes a PI while facing the past that haunts her, leading her to eventually solve the mystery surrounding the death of the person she loved.

The show faces a lot of issues in a fair way, issues that a lot of shows, no matter how badass, try to avoid. Issues addressed include mental health, PTSD, especially in marines, life outside of prison, family issues, and a ton of other things. Something I didn't realise until googling it was that the show is actually based on a comic book which is pretty cool, we need more comics adapted for the big or little screen outside of DC and Marvel.

This one is even quite relatable, Dex isn't a superhero, she's just an ordinary woman facing a ton of issues and doing the best she can. There's nothing remarkable about her, other than her penchant for getting in trouble, she's a veteran with PTSD and other issues true to life, everyone can find something in her that they can relate to. She even indulges in a magnitude of sins in order to stifle her grief and trauma, sex and booze ladies and gents, who hasn't delved down that path one way or another.

Stumptown has to be one of the best series I have watched recently, and that's saying something. It's action packed, follows roughly three different people and their story lines, and isn't hard to get along with. I do like a show which is easy to follow even with complex characters. I was sad to hear that it has recently been cancelled despite being renewed for a season 2, there was a wee cliffhanger at the end that I want to see resolved but it isn't a major one so I won't lose any sleep if it's not.

Can we just take a moment to note Cobie though? This is actually the first time I've seen her outside of How I Met Your Mother or a Marvel film and I am completely loving her range. Marvel she was serious, HIMYM she was funny and bright, in this she's a mess and somewhat amusing doing it but she does it so well. When we talk about underrated actors and actresses, she ought to be on the damn list.

I cannot be the only one who is shipping Dex and Grey. I even saw a post on Instagram from Alibi who was shipping, I mean come on. The on off thing between Dex and Hoffman was cute but it would never have worked, although she's inspired him to be a bit more 'out of the box' he's way too textbook for her and Grey is just as much of a mess but spontaneous like her, they fit. They say don't date your best friend as it only ends in heartbreak and a loss of a friend, I know that from experience but in some occasions it works out for the best and they turn out to be your soulmate. I hope this is one of those, they both deserve some stable happiness from a relationship, as Grey's girlfriend was a toxic so & so who framed Dex to get them to stop talking to each other. Wild times.

I could talk about this show for a long time, my mum wasn't so keen on it, the first handful of episodes were really good, but she thought it got quite silly towards the end, I think that's text book comic to screen however and I really enjoy that. It doesn't have to be entirely realistic to give it that realism we want to relate to. Oh well.

So overall then, I give Stumptown a 6/10. I was torn between a 6 and a 7 but have decided on the lower as although the show was pretty good, it was one of those where you can scroll through your phone while watching and not lose the plot. It was action packed but didn't keep my attention for long. I do however implore you to give it a go, Alibi is pumping out some great shows at the moment and a lot of people I talk to have no idea the channel even exists so have a looksie!!

As always people, look both sides of the road before crossing, stay safe, and be nice!
