Those of you who are very close to me will note my newfound love of Disney movies. This one in particular is one which is very close to my heart due to the nicknames/inside joke it inspired between me and Sam. Now it is one of those go to films of mine which I like to re-watch every time the occasion calls for it, and it truly never gets old.
I have to say, apart from Hades, I have never admired a Disney Villain more. There's just something about Yzma, voiced by the brilliant Eartha Kitt, which calls to my soul, perhaps it's her passion or downright determination to get somewhere in life? Regardless she is one of the more thought out bad guys, she's got rock solid motive and a laboratory to make stuff happen.
Now this film is pretty popular anyway, but I would still say it was underrated. It deserves BIG love just like Atlantis, mainly for the comedy genius. But I think another reason it's so popular, according to the internet anyway, would be due to the unorthodox use of breaking the 4th wall. This is mainly unheard of by a Disney character, and Kuzco's casual use of it as he's watching back the story with us really helps us to feel involved. I also really enjoy the family element, this isn't about a Princess or a love story, this is plain and simple selfish motive being transitioned into a care for others, really teaches a lesson.
I mean honestly can you think of anything better than sitting down on a lazy afternoon and watching an animated comedy? But one of those classics where it does still tug at your heart strings a little, but is kinda old school animation, it feels like childhood, it's fresh, it brings a new feeling into your old soul. J'adore! The Emperor's New Groove just feels like the epitome of the noughties, it was familiar and new, classic Disney but not, but despite everything it would still be a film you could never pass by. I feel like it deserves cult classic status, it's from a time where life was so much simpler. For one, I was three years old when this film came out, what 3 year old doesn't have a zest for life? Ah, good times.
I'm not ashamed to be a grown woman who still watches Disney films (or other cartoons), a person has to have some creature comforts and these happen to be mine. Not only that with this generation what twenty something doesn't still love a Disney film, Disney+ was a revelation for my people, children smildren.
Can we just go back to the film for uno momento, I just want to note the culture appreciation. The colours, the royal figures, the DETAIL. They Inca-ed hard. Peasant vs Emperor, unlikely to go the way it did, especially in the sense of the Llama, but Disney made it happen and I for one am very happy they did.
Going back to the subject of underrated classics, I would just like to mention a few which you might enjoy if you liked this film. Obviously as previous mentioned you've got Atlantis: The Lost Empire, The Black Cauldron, The Sword in the Stone, Lilo & Stitch, and Hercules. All of which focus on various cultures and relationships outside of the usual Princess love story trope.
I'd like to give this noughties classic a solid 8/10, sure it's got some flaws if you look really really close, but otherwise it's just a bit of fun to enjoy on a cosy afternoon. It holds more logic than mumbo jumbo (if we miss out the talking Llama, kitten, and chipmunks), and everything is done for a reason not just out of vain desires, not including Kuzco as he is just vain, unlike the Evil Queen in Snow White, she was just bitter because Snow was prettier so decided to have her murdered, Yzma wants legit revenge and power over a country she felt she earned the right to own, that's character development for ya.
Anyway, I came to a conclusion on this one a lot sooner than I thought I would purely for the fact I'm bias, so sorry about that. The good news is you aren't subjected to my rambling so yay! I hope you are enjoying life to a safe extent at the moment and are reveling in the let up on some lockdown restrictions. Be safe you lovely people!! Peace!
