So as a last minute change to my schedule, a whole day after I was due to post it in the first place, we will now look at the cute animated movie Arthur Christmas!
I really like this movie, it's warm and fuzzy and I feel like I relate to Arthur on a level I probably shouldn't. Those slippers? Gimmie. I would also accompany my Grandad on a wild trip in order to make sure no one gets left out for Christmas. Just call me Arthur.
Now I did rewatch the movie on Netflix last night so I could accurately talk about it, but this week has been a nightmare so I fell asleep halfway through. Sorry. From what I did see however, my instant dislike of Steve is still warranted.
For those who don't know who Steve is, he's the guy who will inherit being Santa, and Arthur's older brother. He is tech savvy and over-efficient but in the wrong way. Everything becomes just a number to him and hence a child ends up missed, which I'm sure you'll agree is not how you do Christmas. Some things are best left the traditional way. But he just doesn't care. 99.99999% is all he needs for a success rate. What a Scrooge.
Luckily we have Arthur, the sweetest guy and most Christmas mad lunatic I've ever encountered. He saves the day. At this point the actual Santa is in retirement run down so is oblivious to what's actually going on until the sheep....um I mean Elves, start asking awkward questions.
That is something I want to question actually. I know Elves are innocent creatures but surely they would have enough human knowledge by now to know that everyone matters? Are they really that isolated in the North Pole that they struggle to know everyone matters, where is the humanity? I think I know the answer, Steve. He has literally brainwashed everyone to think in figures. People are a percentage and he has lost touch with things that really matter. There is a life lesson in there somewhere kids.
I love the little touches in this though. Still got Rudolph although he is an old reindeer resembling an old dog at this point. Still got old Santa, Bill Nighy does that great by the way, and everything just feels nice, ya know? Christmas jumpers, reindeer slippers, ninja elves, have you every seen Santa Claus with Tim Allen? Ninja Elves are a staple at Christmas.
And on that note, I think it is far more feasible for the Elves to deliver all the prezzies rather than one guy. Ninja Elves are jumping through windows and down chimneys, they've got house alarm procedures, kid waking up plans and don't forget alternative ways in to avoid any pets. Cue floorboard scene. What I'm saying is, if we adopted this version when telling the legend/myth, depending what you wanna believe in, of Santa, Pierre Noel, Father Christmas, whatever, then the magic might stay with kids a little longer as it's a wee bit more believable. In the event I ever reproduce, that is the tale I'm going to go with.
I'm not sure that Steve really fits the mold of Santa, he's too hard and calculating. Santa clearly needs to be soft and a little simple. The role was made for Arthur, just look at his dad. Obviously Steve got in there first as he's the first born but it should be down to competency of the role, traditionally speaking of course if the new age stuff doesn't fit the bill.
I think I'm going off on a tangent so lets *wrap* this up quick. I am not sorry for that at all. Bryony would be proud of me. I would like to give Arthur Christmas a jolly good 7/10. It is everything you want it to be and should be shown every Christmas. It has your happy ending, your dodgy disequilibrium and brings a family together while embracing old traditions and new ones. I love it.
If you are in the UK it is on Netflix and you need to get watching, if you aren't I'm afraid you'll have to find it but I'm sure it wont be far away and you certainly wont regret it.
As normal my loves, stay safe, love unconditionally, and don't do anything stupid. Christmas is about 2 weeks away and we are a tier 3 area where I am so no festivities, but it doesnt mean we can't enjoy this year, just make it about you, be selfish and do things (safely) for your own enjoyment. I've decorated the whole office to feel merry. Be kind guys, bye bye!
