I remember, about a decade ago, I scoffed when my parents told me they were watching a reboot of Sherlock Holmes. It was a case of yeah whatever, how many times is this going to be done? But out of pure laziness I stuck around and watched the first episode and then I was hooked.
Four series and a special later, our nation just can't get enough of the consulting detective, begging the question, will there be another series?
I'll tell you this for nothing, it has certainly become my comfort show. Wanting a safe little crime drama on a rainy evening? Sherlock. Want a Benedict Cumbercookie fix? Sherlock. Just want to watch someone with sharp cheek bones running around like a psycho, or more fittingly sociopath? S-H-E-R-L-O-C-K. The BBC were on to a winner after the pilot episode, I personally wasn't too keen on the 3rd and 4th series, 1 & 2 are the best in my book and then it sort of lost its capacity to impress. Sherlock and Mycroft's sister has always been hinted at and she has lots of different names. Charlotte, Enola, Eurus, I don't know why it changes and to be honest I'm not up for researching it. I've struggled through my fair share of Sherlock Holmes stories and not seen her mentioned thus far to know if Conan-Doyle christened her himself, or this is of recent times. Young Sherlock Holmes novels mention her and I do quite enjoy those, purely on a whim off the back of the film Young Sherlock Holmes, which is one of my favourite films ever and led me to discover works based on the consulting detective in his youth.
I can't help but think this is one of Benedict's most attractive roles. He has definitely embodied the moody and yet sharp witted man we came to love. A hard shoe to fill after Jeremy Brett did so well in the previous television series, and I'm not even going to go into all the movie adaptations and the excellent men who stepped up there.
Just also wanted to note how Martin Freeman managed to fly under my radar until this? Literally watched a ton of things from before Sherlock even aired and there he is, but I never noticed until now. Wacky times, I should be ashamed.
As I said back in my Whitechapel review, that opening episode has to be the best one. Phil Davis was almost too convincing as our bad guy. He was also the set up for our introduction to the main villain Moriarty. Ever since I got hooked on this show, anything I've ever seen with Davis in I blanche, I'm sure he is really an outstanding guy but that performance just gave me the creeps.
I also think Rupert Graves is underrated as Lestrade, I've seen some of the other things this gent has been in and he is a perfect fit for our favourite Inspector, we needed to explore him. And Moriarty? My god, Jim Moriarty, Andrew Scott, AMAZING. Nuff said.
I think it quite amusing how back in the early stages of my teen years there was this ultimate fandom called SuperWhoLock. In case you are too cool, too old, or too young to remember this simpler time it was an amalgamation of the three biggest fan base of that era, Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock. I know Tumblr is pretty abandoned these days but I'm fairly certain there are a good few of those blogs still going, and I'm sure if you scrolled back far enough on my personal 'gram you'll find some incriminating evidence that I too was an active part of that world.
I almost miss those times. No plague, adult life didn't abuse me the way it does, and I didn't have to work to stay alive, money wasn't really a concept for a preteen the way it is now. Blue eyeshadow and bad liner was the phase and who cared? Clearly not me but my god would I attack myself with a make up wipe now.
It is such a shame our main blokes don't get along the way we thought they would in real life. Not that it is any of our business, but just goes to show you how brilliant they are at their craft. I know it is a controversial subject, but maybe we don't NEED a fifth series, just because something is really cool and we fixate on it doesn't really mean we need more. Can't we just appreciate the art we have rather than demanding more to fill the void? We might not like the changes made, stick with what we know and therefore we can't ruin anything. Fight me, I said what I said.
So before I find myself in trouble for some reason or another, I give Sherlock a reasonable 8/10. It was there for us in our time of need, it made a generation actually observe rather than glide by, and probably made us a lot smarter too. It successfully brought an old (consulting) detective into the modern world and I appreciate that, times are changing and we need new role models, but it isn't so bad to rehash the old ones too. Brings generations closer together.
On that note, as always, stay safe, respect your elders, and eat something you nerd.
