35. Black Narcissus

So I know this actually aired during the last dregs of 2020 but I only just got around to finishing the last episode. I know, I know, out of all the episodes to miss I missed the finale, but it clashed with something else and I have priorities!

Anyway, so I downloaded this app called Tv Time recently because I'm hooked on Goodreads and thought it would be a great idea to track my watching as well as reading habits. I very quickly got caught up in that and this was a recommendation to watch. I ticked off the first two episodes no issues at all but I couldn't tick the series off as watched until I actually finished it obviously. I just couldn't leave it there when I was so close to the end, so I caught up on Saturday morning.

I have a question. What the f*ck happened there?! This was a lot darker than I thought. But Mr Dean? Dishy as hell. Now this narrative was somewhat complex I suppose and it isn't one of those shows you can sit and use as background noise while you scroll through your socials. One tiny slip and you have no idea what's going on as the details are woven in to every scene so delicately, if you blink you'll miss something. Luckily I caught onto this fairly quickly and although I didn't really have any interest in this series at the start I soon thanked myself for sticking around.

There are some times in this series where I wonder if it's actually part of the DC Universe as I cannot see what on earth is going on. The lighting in some scenes is so dark I have to turn up the tv to hear the words so I know I haven't had a powercut or something. And Saturday when I caught up on my phone? Pure hell, had to hold the screen practically to my eyeball to decipher what's happening. Dark atmosphere does not mean you need dark lighting, sometimes it's better to contrast, makes people feel uneasy when the subject matter doesn't match the surroundings. In most cases we got that here especially with the bright cultural colours and the sunshine, but when you crucially need to see what's happening and can't it isn't so great.

Job well done to the actress who plays Sister Ruth! I absolutely hated her. That character was done so well and even during the ending, despite it not technically being her fault, I didn't feel sorry for her at all. It was a fate of her own design, but let's face it, based on what we knew of the past of the building we knew it was inevitable. What a wild ride though.

I'm with the critics here. Sister C (I am not even going to attempt to spell her name) should have run off with Mr Dean. All that we are meant for another life bullsh*t? Not having it, get together now or get lost. Seriously, the sexual tension was killing me, they were both something to each other that neither of them had ever experienced or were open to experiencing before. If they had just bit the bullet and got together she would experience love for who she really is, not just a good time, and he would have gotten to fall in love for the first time and be loved in return. Something he clearly didn't allow himself before as he thought it was a set back. He shot his shot and was rejected, that broke my heart.

I have to say, I absolutely loved the creepy vibe. I'm aware this was actually a reboot of a much older film, and I watched the film not that long ago actually, and surprisingly it pretty much stayed true to that original medium. That of course spoilt the ending for me. I knew what happened to Sister Ruth. Even still, the suspense and supernatural atmosphere was a winner, also Nuns? Has anyone seen the Nun? Or any of the Conjuring movies? It already gave this a bad rep, you knew it was going to be creepy. I'm sorry but controversial thought, the church isn't seen as innocent anymore, it is a vessel in movies for corruption, this is what makes it scary.

Anyway, I thought it was very well done. Still now overly sure what the f*ck happened but I know enough to know I enjoyed myself, and that's all you want from a TV show. Would I watch it again? No probably not, its one of those shows I might consider putting on as background noise if I'm feeling something I've watched already, but otherwise once was enough.

On that note, my lovelies, I'm going to give the 2020 version of Black Narcissus a 5/10. This has to be a record for me, two low-ish scores in a row? If you are a weekly reader than you'll remember this is on par with Hungry Hill from last week. Both of this things are on par, they are good if you are into it but not too great if you aren't.

As always, be good, be safe, binge telly, I don't know, you do you, but I'll see you next week!!
