60. See How They Run

See How They Run is the type of movie that I live for. I knew this movie was going to have Agatha Christie ties but I didn't realise how deep down that rabbit hole they were going to go.

This movie was a murder mystery in a murder mystery created by the queen of murder mysteries. This is like a meta universe of mysteries and I loved every second. I want this as the typical boxing day blockbuster they chuck on telly each year as its just wild enough for your overstuffed slightly sozzled family to enjoy together.

See How They Run centers around the murder of a top director who has been brought onboard to potentially direct the movie version of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap. Everyone knows the deal is there can't be a movie version until the play finishes, and this is why it has been the longest running play. Our two police peeps are on the clock to try and solve the murder while trying to keep the play running. Ms Christie herself features but I don't want to ruin it and so I'm keeping this recap real brief.

I am so happy to see Charlie Cooper hit the big screen. I'm just happy to see how far he has come from a daft comic working with his sister on This Country to being in a daft film on the big screen. Regardless I adore it all and I just thought he deserved a shout out.

While we are giving out shout outs, has anyone else noticed the surgence of Harris Dickinson lately? Everywhere I look suddenly, this man is there. I first noticed him in Where the Crawdads Sing but since then he is everywhere!

This movie is really clever. For one it blatantly outlines the entire plot right to your face. Pictures and everything. For two, it has big names both literally and figuratively. Not only are most of the cast familiar to us (a primarily British audience, you cannot move for falling over a member of this case in literally anything else we have on TV now), but the characters are huge names from back in the day. Richard Attenborough! Agatha Christie! Shelia Sim! If you are in the know then this brings an added sense of realism to this movie. Plus the star of the show being The Mousetrap.

Speaking of The Mousetrap I absolutely adored the mirroring of the play we saw in the movie. Our characters very cleverly copy the speech the play puts out at the end of the show about being an accessory and not being allowed to speak of the contents of what we have just seen outside of these doors. I am absolutely keeping to that, I've never seen the play and one day hopefully I will, but I know enough about it to appreciate what the film gives us. The whole thing is really special and doesn't spoil anything but is a great accompaniment.

See How They Run looked like a great film to be a part of. Honestly the movie is hilarious and so well written and played. I absolutely love it. The only thing that spoilt my screening was the fact I went to a really early screening (a mistake) and a large group of French children were present. They'd obviously had a school trip to Dover Castle that day as they all had the souvenirs. But they were up running about and screaming, the teachers were on their phone the whole time. It was awful. Unfortunately, I was the only one in that screening who was not part of their group so I'm guessing they just didn't care about bothering me, but it was such a shame that they couldn't be respectful. Before anyone asks, yes I did know they were French because they spoke French and so do I (although not brilliantly and not a lot). Not in anyway a reflection of the French as many Dovorians are just as disrespectful at the cinema but I'm telling you my story.

Anyways, I hope to watch this movie again in the near future. Hopefully with a big glass of gin, my family around me, a warm fire, and a belly full of goodies. This is honestly the perfect cosy movie and I think it is my favourite film that has come out in 2022. There have been a lot of good films that have come out last year and plenty still to come in this. But See How They Run just appeals to me on a huge level. I love murder mysteries, I live for Agatha Christie, I love a cosy movie and this for me, hits every single tick box I have. The humour was dark, the writing was clever, the actors talented. Uh *chefs kiss*.

I give See How They Run an 8/10. Perhaps a tiny bit of bias in that review but you can fight me. This is a typically British cosy mystery despite the fact we can't really take credit for it. It is clever, it is adorable, oh my gosh I love it so much. I'd say the Queen of Mystery herself would have approved, despite technically being in it. I hope there is a book version!
