157. Marvel Zombies

Those who have followed my media consumption for the last few years will know that I am not a fan of zombies. I consider it my worst nightmare, and yet for some reason I continue to upset myself with them, I guess on a deeper level to see that they have been vanquished and that there very well could be a light at the end of the tunnel.

However, on a much, much deeper level than that, I think I just like to be terrified sometimes, as does everyone. It gives a little thrill, especially when you know it isn't real.

Ever since the What If episode regarding zombies and the Marvel Universe, I have been invested in the greater prospect of what would happen when the worlds heroes became their biggest villains. The prospect entices me as it is so revolting in an appealing manner. There seems absolutely no hope, and based on what I saw there wasn't. This pleases the small part of me that was not absolutely terrified at the thought, I like twisted tales that mirror the dark aspect of reality we run from. So in theory I should have enjoyed this more.

We binged the whole thing one Sunday night before bed. It wasn't planned, and this was back when it first came out, but I can't help but think how disappointed I was despite having what I wanted from the series. I wanted to see all my favourites as gormless shells of their former selves. I wanted epic fights and no hope endings. And I got that. But I didn't really understand the motive behind it.

The premise is that one of the Earths has been infected by some kind of alien virus which turns everyone into zombies...duh. But this virus has wiped out the entire world including anyone with any superpowers. Nothing has been strong enough to stop it, but turns out Wanda is actually powerful enough to keep her mind. If anything her power has strengthened now that she is dead and the zombies have flocked to her. It's down to a small group of survivors who dwindle at an alarming rate to try and save what is left. Only the Nova Corps have forbade it and basically left earth to die which makes everything they have fought for pointless. It all squares down to Wanda and Kamala Khan, but then is posed more as a beginning than an ending.

I may have missed something, so a re-watch is on the cards when I eventually get round to my Marvel Quest where I hope to watch them all in order. But as the Disney Challenge is on hold and my ADHD distracts me with side missions, that could be a while away. But what is eating away at me, is I don't understand why Wanda wants the entire universe to be zombies. She is sentient, she is in control. But even when I googled it I don't understand. Also it annoys me that there is a cliff-hanger. I know it was being floated about a season 2 which hopefully would answer some questions, but that wasn't promised. I just feel like it was a very underwhelming conclusion and that is why I have scored it the way I have.

My favourite character in the Marvel Universe is Wanda, it always has been, but the more she's grown in power, and following the events of WandaVision, I just adore her. I want to be her. So having her as the big bad in a mimic of Multiverse of Madness was a brilliant decision, I enjoy her as a misunderstood villain more than I do with her as the hero, but I need a reason and she didn't have a motive for this story. I liked the fact Vision was still pretty loyal to her and I also liked the fact that we even had a zombie Thanos. This was an event bigger than Infinity War and Endgame, everyone came together (just ignore it was animated) and pretty much everyone died. Bleak as shit and I love it.

I'm giving Marvel Zombies a 7/10. Love the idea of heroes vs zombies, love it more as the zombies are fallen heroes, peak tier stuff. The execution of it was also really good, it is literally just the fact that I dont understand why it has come to this and I didn't like the ending. I even thought it was really cool that it was the new generation of Avengers that primarily survived, until they didn't. I just wanted it to be more thought out, but I feel like there was so much pressure on the studio to release it that they didn't have time to do it right, it is a shame. But guess we have to wait and find out if there is a season 2.
