As everyone is aware, I'm a Spongebob fan which is a little frowned upon when you're an adult, but why should I have to give up what makes me happy when it doesn't hurt anyone?
So two days after Christmas Jamie treated me to ice cream and a few hours out to see the new movie.
After subjecting ourselves to the Sandy Cheeks Movie a few months ago, I wasn't holding out much hope. While I liked the Plankton Movie, nothing had held close to the original Spongebob Movie all those years ago. However, I was pleasantly surprised.
While Search for Squarepants utilised a different animation style and kept to the over-goofiness of the characters we've seen in recent films, it somehow captured magic close to the original Spongebob run. We had a few callbacks to the older Spongebob and we once again had a more mature and emotional storyline.
This movie once again revolves around Spongebob wanting to be seen as more than simply a silly boy. Instead of wanting to be seen as grown to be a manger, this time he wants to impress Mr Krabs and be a squash buckler. He wants adventure, he wants to be seen as capable. Sadly, Mr Krabs poo-poos this once again which sends Spongebob on yet another spite filled adventure to prove him wrong, but this time instead of a fool Hardy adventure with villains, he's delivered right into the hands of The Flying Dutchman.
Dutchy is played by none other than Mark Hamill in this movie, both in live action and animated form. I can't help but think he revelled in this role as he took it so seriously that it made the film. The Dutchman took Spongebob in so that he could trick him into ending his curse and was quite nurturing at times it seemed a shame that he was bad all along. I kinda wished that he had had so much fun that he wanted to stay in the sea.
There wasn't really any other recognisable guest stars this time which was nice, Sandy and Plankton also took a massive backseat in this movie only appearing once to dip their toes in. Nah this was a movie about Spongebob, Patrick and Mr Krabs just like the first one. Strictly speaking I'd actually go as far as saying that this was the Mr Krabs Movie and now all we need is one for Squidward as Patrick has his own show.
I liked that this film was fun and not too overly stupid like some of the more recent ones. Spongebob seemed near enough himself again and not dumbed down. I enjoyed that and his relationship with Krabs. I also loved that this was a proper adventure again not just silliness on the way to the next plot device. We learnt more about the characters here even if it wasn't Canon.
I can easily see this movie creeping up there with the best of the Spongebob specials. Obviously my favourite will always be Atlantis Squarepantis and the original movie, then maybe the Plankton movie.
Overall I'm giving the newest Spongebob film a 7/10. It was enjoyable nonsense rather than daft for the sake of it. I'd watch it again and it was an event for us so it was special.
