What a crock of absolute shit this was.
What they call in the biz a 'locked room thriller', Flight Risk traps three characters in a tiny plane in the sky, one of whom is a hired killer, the other a cop, and the remaining the intended victim.
The selling point for this movie was Mark Wahlberg, the downfall of this movie was the same man. Bursting full of energy to play anything other than the rolls we know and love him for, Wahlberg went above and beyond to play the worst unhinged killer I've ever seen. He was not believable in his insanity, and you could just see it was him trying to be someone he's not.
The film begins with Michelle Dockery busting Topher Grace and putting him into witness protection. They then have to take a very small plane to their destination as he's been hiding in Alaska or somewhere like that (this was a while back) and very early on Grace finds that their pilot, Daryl, is not the pilot Daryl as he comes across his ID.
He tries to notify Dockery, who doesn't get the hint for a while, but once she does all hell breaks loose. Wahlberg actually then takes a back seat as he's beaten up and tied up in the cargo hold and only surfaces again for the odd fist fight.
We then agonisingly sit through Dockery contacting her organisation for details on how to fly the plane as well as discovering there is a mole who is her boss. Another fight ensues, Grace is shot and Dockery lands the plane.
Wahlberg escapes, gets run over by either the fire service or the ambulance, Grace makes it by the skin of his teeth and Dockery saves his life a second time and escorts him personally to the hospital.
Aside from the fact this film was agonisingly slow, it was bearable.
The acting was shoddy, Dockery's American accent was shaky, and it was just very much a movie for the sake of Walhberg being able to be someone else for a change. Mel Gibson needs to up his A game as this was not the best film he's ever directed. Having minimal cast was nice, but having big names means nothing if you aren't going to use them properly.
This happens to be the second film of the year that I'VE picked that turned out to be quite bad. It's now 2 for 2 as I've levelled Jamie's total from last year with Planet of the Apes and Furiosa. He wasn't thrilled with this movie either and we all know he hated Nosferatu which he will not let me forget...
Overall then, I give Flight Risk a 5/10. Watchable but I wouldn't want to a second time.
