I think this was actually the very first Hawman sibling double date with our respective other halves. This was Matt's choice of movie and one that none of us was actually interested in, but we said for his birthday we'd go when it was released and it was time to keep the promise.
So there we were with our snacks, ready to watch Jack Black be awesome and save an expectedly bad movie from being Razzie worthy. I would argue that he just about did this, but he didn't play a character he was just himself.
Riding off the success of playing Bowser in the Super Mario movie, I had high hopes that Black would pull another blinder as he seems to be good at being a lovable goof in a child's movie. The entire cast would have actually succeeded in fooling me into thinking this was a good family friendly movie were it not for Emma Myers who overacted the whole film and took the fun out of things. I'm unsure if she thought that treating this as a serious gig rather than just having fun might have elevated the status a bit, but it didnt work. She just came across as trying too hard.
The rest of the cast 100% got the memo though and were there to have fun which we saw on screen and made the movie a fun thing to watch. It was absolutely absurd I wont lie, but it was amusing.
We follow Henry, a science outcast as he navigates a new school in a town his sister has moved to (his guardian) for her new job. This town already seems a little weird and to be honest Natalie doesn't look much older than Henry so why she babies him so much is beyond me. Anyway, Henry meets Garrett (Jason Momoa) a grown up gaming champion who now runs a failing store and they form a weird friendship.
They come across this crystal (I never played the game so lets not get specific especially as its been months since I saw the movie) and reunite it with its holder thing and a portal opens up which they go through and then they meet Steve (Jack Black) and then its chaos as they try to save this Minecraft world from some cubelike piggies.
It was a wild ride and there were some big names in here like Black, Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge who is my personal favourite person. Was it enough to save the movie? Eh, just about. It was palatable chaos but something to keep the gamers entertained, this wasnt enough for a mainstream audience. This movie seemed like nothing more than fan service which is fair enough, we need a bit of that every now and again, but I'm not sure it deserved to dominate the box office as it did. It was watchable and laughable, but whether or not it was 'good' is still to be debated.
It did have a story though so I cant knock it too much even if it wasn't my cup of tea. It was absolute chaos, there were zombies and weird Monks (villagers) and wolves which you could tame. It was literally like watching a 10 year old play the game, but if you find that entertaining then this is the film for you. Would I watch it again? Surprisingly yes. I'd watch it as background noise as it was non offensive and funny in places, we all need a harmless film every now and then just to help us calm from the stresses of life. This is it, just a bit of mindless chaos and fun, they must have had a blast filming this.
A feelgood movie such as this is worth its weight in gold, but on this occasion I'm giving it a 5/10. It was nuts and fanservice, but it was watchable insanity, that doesnt mean it was good by any scope, but watchable.
