We watched this movie many months ago now and it was batshit crazy. I never realised Robert Pattinson had such range, but he played 18 versions of the same character eerily well. You could clearly see they were all different from the way he spoke and held himself, but they were all him and there were 18 versions, two of which had to share the same scene for a large chunk of the movie.
His voice didn't sound like the R-Patz we are used to either, he is way more talented than what people give him credit for. This guy is more than just Twilight and people need to remember that. I found his Batman a little boring but it broke him from the teen mould people are so keen to place him in forever, I still think he did a good job though, but Mickey 17 blew me away.
Another film with big star power, Mickey 17 follows Mickey, a man running from a mob boss who he accidentally angered by tagging along with his waste of space best friend. Mickey is a no purpose kind of guy, just sort of hanging on in there and because of that he seems to always be down on his luck. So when his life is threatened his bestie has the great idea of fleeing to space to start a new colony and the only way Mickey could join is to be an expendable.
Being an expendable isn't as cool as it may seem. It's literally being cloned and killed over and over so that the others can live. This is how we meet Mickey 17. At this point he's fallen in love with quite a high up lady in the new society, he's got his stuff together and he's trying not to die if he can help it. When he falls down an ice shaft and is left for dead by his waste of space best friend he gets eaten by a big roly poly insect type beast. They print out Mickey 18 and get ready to go again, but Mickey 17 isn't dead, the beasts aren't bad, they're helpful.
The golden rule is that you cant have variations, so any clone surplus to requirement must die. 18 tries to kill 17 and vice versa before they decide to take turns. Of course this ends up going badly and they get caught especially as the two Mickeys' have vastly different personalities as the memories of 17 were never downloaded to give to 18 as his body was missing.
We navigate this very strange situation through a lot of violence and then an all out war on the poor beasts when Mark Ruffalo's Trump caricature decides to ignore all those around his so his wife can make her weird sauces... yeah I dont know either. But Ruffalo seems to be able to do a self centred psycho really well, his performance in Poor Things and Mickey 17 really solidified this.
The two Mickeys are sent out to do a quick peace talk (its actually murder but they choose not to) and 17 becomes the surviving Mickey. He also becomes the last Mickey as by the end of the movie expendables are no longer needed due to peace and harmony. As if.
It was a whirlwind of a movie but entertaining insanity. It drew an awful lot of disturbing parallels to situations happening in our real lives which made it seem even more outlandish in this setting where it belonged, but then you realise that our own world leaders are worse than what's in the movie and you get sad.
I'm giving Mickey 17 a 7/10. It was pure chaos but an interesting story. I would watch it again but I'd have to be in the mood for it, this isn't something I'd pick for a movie night, it would have to be on and I'd just tune in.
