This movie was everything I had hoped it would be.
I did get scared for sure, I'd read other reviews saying this was clearly meant to be a direct to Disney+ release before they changed their mind, so I thought that maybe they'd cheapened out. Boy was I wrong.
Freakier Friday returns to the Coleman family and Tess and Anna have a very close relationship still following the original film. However, all these years on Tess is now a grandma and Anna is a single mother trying to gentle parent in this day and age so as to not trigger her daughter. This is of course laughable how over PC parenting is and it was meant to be a joke, especially as Tess is a therapist.
Harper and Lily are enemies. However, these enemies are forced to become step sisters when their parents are brought together at a meeting about their behaviour. They do not like this and when they end up switching bodies with Tess and Anna they do whatever they can in order to sabotage Eric and Anna's wedding so that they dont become family and also dont have to move/stay in a city where they dont belong.
Do they succeed in this mission? Yes, but they also learn a valuable lesson and soon make it right. It is all tied up in a lovely bow and I couldn't have hoped for more.
This movie was cheesy as hell, a little cringe, and absolutely hilarious. That was exactly the point, to match the vibe of the original. It was fun, it was girly, it was the best self care movie and exactly what I needed. I treated myself to a little ice cream and sat watching this movie (Jamie couldnt make it) on my tod and it reminded me of my youth during the noughties when the original movie came out. I left that cinema happier, it was magic. Everyone needs a cheeky feelgood movie from time to time and I'm telling you that this is that movie.
I was a little worried about the newer characters, but Manny Jacinto in particular killed it. He was loveable, sincere, and honestly his character was the perfect match for Anna. He was supportive, ambitious, and I loved that she got her happy ending. The girls as well, the brattiness, the chatting back, the spite. Loved it. Obviously as an adult I find it annoying, but they mirror teenage Anna from the original movie and obviously back in the day we were on her side. Now we've grown with Anna and are more in the mothering situation we are meant to still side with her. It was a clever little manipulation to give Tess a lil slack back in the original. It is even more funny to see her undermining her daughter and being the fun grandma to the kids now that she no longer needs to be as responsible. Honestly, I just loved the femininity of this movie, the matriarch eras here. We came full circle.
This is the first Disney movie that I have actually enjoyed for a really long time, not only that, but the original cast from the first film all made a cameo in this one which I thought was a beautiful touch. It wasn't exactly a rehash of the first movie, but it had some huge similarities but it was better for that. If they'd flipped the script too much it would never have worked and you can tell that everyone had an absolute blast filming this. We even got more Anna music and guitar shredding and it was perfect. I am also dead envious of Lindsay Lohan's hair and I want it so bad. But really I was super thrilled that she looked happy and healthy and had returned to our screens living her best life. She deserves it.
Jamie Lee Curtis will forever be one of my favourite actresses. Her comedy chops are brilliant and she never ceases to make me feel warm and happy. This woman was in a lot of movies I hold dear from my childhood and all of them make me feel safe and cosy, this is my favourite movie of the year so far and to be honest I think that is a little bias, but it has been such a long time since I've left the cinema in such a good mood. It was a happiness injection, a little bit of harmless fun. Take ya gal pals and relive your youth, forget the adult responsibilities for a bit. Cinema is not dead, it just needs more cheesy movies to remind you of the child you are.
Freakier Friday has it all. OG cast, love stories, cringiness, nice American muscle cars being driven at speed. However, not by LL so the Herbie days are over sadly, but we had our throwbacks and I am grateful. I just loved this film, it wasn't anything special, but it was special to me.
I'm giving Freakier Friday a 9/10. Live a little. Have some ice cream, get some pop corn, and have a guilty pleasure night out at the cinema. This is the movie we needed right now, just some silliness. I honestly loved this film to the point I might go and see it again. As I said, it isn't anything special, there's no agenda or CGI or action. It is literally a teen movie for the girls (and guys!) who are navigating their adult lives. We get to be young again for just under 2 hours and that is why this movie means so much to me. It was a long time coming.
