156. Wake Up Dead Man

After this film being out for absolutely ages and having promised my mum I'd watch it with her, we finally found the time to be in the same room together for a few hours to be able to watch it.

I do like the Knives Out movies. I love a quirky detective, a crime formula, and an elaborate reveal. These movies are every single detective trope rolled into one and I absolutely love it. It is so clever with how it has been done, and each one seems better than the last.

This one has Benoit Blanc take a tiny bit more of a backseat than in the last two films, but a vicar who was a former boxer, played by Josh O'Connor, takes the stage when trying to prove himself innocent of the murder of his rather awful colleague played by Josh Brolin. It was the battle of the Joshes and the Goonies alumni lost.

Not really a spoiler as someone had to die and to be honest it was going to be the character that was the biggest arsehole, but what I love about these movies is that it is a little hard to tell as they all are.

I don't want to give away any more of the plot, but it is both very twisty and also fairly predictable. I knew who was behind it all along, I just didn't have a motive, and didn't know who else was involved which is where the twists come in. I liked the fact that the film gave you the answers, but also was like syke it isn't as simple as that. That for me is the best kind of murder mystery, the ones that have you hooked so you have to see how it all plays out to get the full answer of who, how, and why.

Every single face in this movie was someone, and every single one of them gave it what they had. They must of had such a fun time on set. I bet it was beautiful chaos.

I enjoyed this instalment more then I did the first one, but less then I did the second. Something about Edward Norton once again playing someone unhinged parodying 'And Then There Were None' which is my favourite Christie novel, beats a locked room mystery which I am also fond of.

The theme here is they are all impossible crimes, but all stem from desperation and all are outrageous in terms of how they were carried out. It is absolutely ridiculous the lengths some of these people were going to, and the things they did, and yet they somehow made sense. It seemed like we were thrown into the chaos where everything was believable and because literally everything was happening at once anything outlandish became the norm in the flurry too. I like that. But as an agent of chaos myself, I would.

Overall I am awarding Wake Up Dead Man an 8/10. It was a very enjoyable, very long movie. My attention span was not happy, but there was enough questions that needed answers to keep me occupied. It was funny, it was sad, it was bizarre, it was gory. Everything I want from a movie really. Star appeal, macabre scenes, skeletons, tombs. This was a goth chicks dream on steroids. Beautifully done. I anticipate these movies more than I do Kenneth Branagh's Christie remakes. I need more murder mysteries invading the movie crowd. See How They Run was an excellent movie to storm the box office, as were the three in the Christie Universe, plus the Knives Out trilogy, and even Amsterdam. But where are the others? I need more!

Feel free to send me suggestions if you can think of other murder mystery movies I may enjoy. I'm really into my detective scene at the moment and quite like cosy crime. DM me!
