152. Percy Jackson & The Olympians Season 2

I realise now that I never actually did a review on season 1, however my schedule is too packed to rewatch it, so basically it is too late now and I'm jumping to the second season in order to be relevant.

Aside from the Traitors UK, this was the hottest show of January that I took part in watching. I loved the movies with Logan Lerman, but I respected that they were so far removed from the books that they were something entirely different. I made peace with that and I enjoy them for what they were. I also loved the books and plan to re-read them but have no idea when that will be.

So when all my old fandom friends popped up again and all I saw were posts about Percabeth and how the new series better be faithful this time, I knew that the revival of my early teenage years was on the horizon and I had better get in line. In fact, the year that the first season premiered ended up being both one of the hardest and yet most rewarding years of my life, and from that I have taken that jumping back into the comfort of my childhood as a coping mechanism isn't a bad thing. These things shaped me, they made me who I am and I am still allowed to like them no matter how old I am. This is the joy in life and I can openly embrace that. Ultimately, my survival was shaped by Doctor Who and Percy Jackson that year. 8 months later, through hard work and barely staying alive, I began to heal and I met Jamie and now look. I'm a qualified historian, I am an adventurer, I have a loving family and boyfriend, and a beautiful dog. Things get better, hold in there.

So going back to the topic at hand, I delved back into the world of Percy Jackson with the new series and I absolutely loved it. So when season 2 FINALLY dropped, I was ready for it and despite being worried that it could trigger some memories I'd rather forget from when I watched the first season, I eventually threw myself in and here we are.

This season tackles book 2, The Sea of Monsters and follows our favourite trio (Percy, Annabeth, and Grover) as they are separated by a number of factors. Grover is trapped in a Cyclops's lair trying to stay alive, Annabeth's attitude has changed towards Percy since they went back to their normal lives and she was pushed to experience the mortal world, and poor Percy is as clueless about life as a demi-god than ever.

A new character is also introduced, spoilers ahead, with Tyson- a cyclops that Sally adopts and sends to camp with Percy to keep safe. Turns out SPOILERS he's a son of Poseidon too, which gets young Percy a lil jelly as he's no longer the important child from one of the big three, there's another who seems a lot more adept in this world than he.

Through general troublemaking, determination, and both good and bad luck, the two brothers and Annabeth risk all to go and save Grover while also having to find the Golden Fleece to save camp and Thalia's tree, fight Luke and Kronos at every turn, and try and steer clear of a great prophecy which turns Percy into a weapon against the gods.

It was addictive, that's for sure. Some of these scenes certainly raised my blood pressure, but as I watched some of them at the gym they also made me work harder so that was good. The acting was perfect, the sets were magical, and the storylines creative. They were both true to the source material while also throwing in a good amount of curveballs for the die hards.

I loved Clarisse struggling with who she was and who she was expected to be. Aside from Percy, she was my favourite in this season. It takes gut to force a ship of the dead to respect you, just as it took guts for her to break her promise to them and face failure.

I really liked this show, but I felt like this season just got better. Percy's subtle crush on Annabeth was not so subtle and I loved it. Takes me back to my Tumblr days and the world of OTPs. This was the adaption Percy Jackson fans deserved and I hope there are many more seasons to come.

My only issue is the fact sometimes I feel like we've entered the DCU with how dark some of the scenes are. I can't see what's happening, this is technically a tween show, they shouldn't be straining their eyes to see shadow figures.

Overall, I'm awarding the 2nd season of Percy Jackson & the Olympians a 7/10. It was engaging, it was coming of age, it was faithful. It made me want to revisit Greek Gods and Mythology which was one of my diploma subjects. Ultimately, it made me want to read the books again and not much inspires me to do that anymore.

This was a throwback to easier days, but also darker days. However, at the end of the day life is worth living. So watch your comfort shows, read your fantasy stories. As long as you aren't hurting anyone, be the great big beautiful person you were born to be. It is easier said then done, believe me I have been there too many times to count, but I'm still here, I'm still taking up space. That's a good thing.
